With the Devils losing their first two games of the season it seemed that the kings of Scottish baseball had been toppled, sparking a 6 way scrap for supremacy. With all the teams looking evenly matched this year it was all to play for, as in a game of throws, you win or you pop fly.
The Devils and Giants were both looking to get back on track after early setbacks and both sides brought their full armies to bear. The Devils struck the first blow as the Giants were overwhelmed by White Walkers (well a pasty Australian) with Chris W base on balls forcing in Sylvain for the opening run. However, the Giants would respond immediately by taking advantage of a couple of infield singles allowing Panda to drive in two runs.

The Devils had plenty of battle hardened veterans on display but in the 2nd it was fresh faced 2nd baseman Sam (its all relative) who would get things started by getting his first hit of the season and being driven in by Bret’s RBI double. Hsin Yen would then put the Devils in front with a 2RBI single. In the bottom of the inning the Giants looked to even the score getting runners on second and third with no outs, but Bret was able to hold the door closed to keep the Devils in front.

A lot of people had been saying the Devils ageing stars’ best days were behind them and that winter was coming for this side, but the 4th inning put this argument to rest as the Devils bashed out 8 hits including Home runs by Bret and then Tristram as the American duo proved to be home run Kings, Landing their balls in deep left field. This was followed by doubles by Hsin Yen and Bret again. By the time this assault had finished, 8 runs had crossed the plate.

But in the bottom of the inning there was a further twist to the plot as the Giants battled back. First Adam would hit a long shot to left field, Alex made a last gasp dive for the ball but the ball would go off the tip of his glove and bounce loose. In the ensuing carnage, Adam would dash round the bases to plate a 2RBI inside the park home run. It was a great effort by Alex in left and a Spaniard always pays his debts and he did so the following batter as Oliver hit another majestic shot to left field only to see Alex leap at the wall to rob the Giants shortstop.

The Devils would add to their lead in the 5th as James doubled over the centerfielder to score Dan to make it 13-4. There was no mercy displayed by the Devils as they continued to attack Kyle’s pitching as they scored a further 3 runs in the 6th, including a RBI single by Andrew and another 2 runs in the 7th capped by Bret’s third ground rule double in a row.

This left the Giants down by 13 runs heading into the 7th and they set to work to try and reduce the deficit as they would get two men on base off reliever Hsin-Yen. Then up stepped rookie Luis who promptly hit a moon shot over the left field fence to cut the deficit to 10. However, this would be the last resistance by the determined Giants as Hsin Yen would get the remaining outs to end the game with the Devils victorious 18-8.

So a hard fought battle between these two factions with Devils winning this one with a great offensive display. But an excellent game played by both teams with very few mistakes and not even any Dire Wolfie calls.

From the Giants, it was a good display which on another day could easily have resulted in a win. As for the Devils, they gave a Stark reminder to the other teams today that they are still a force, but will they reclaim the Iron Throne again this season? Next up for the Devils in two weeks will be the Cannons who will take their Unsullied season record into their Edinburgh clash.

MVP: Bret 5-5 1BB 1HR, 4 2B 5 RBIs and 5 runs. Although Scottish baseball will be debating if his new Valyrian Steel bat is legal after this display.
