Game write up:

The Devils took the trip to Glasgow looking to improve on their 3-3 record to start the season. However, it looked like the weather would stand in their way as they encountered typical Scottish summer weather of a 5 hour torrential downpour.
Things started well for the Devils as first inning hits by Chris W, Hsin-yen and Tristram off Comets starter Xander plated 3 runs in the top of the 1st.However, they were aided by a couple of infield errors with the long grass and slippery ball proving difficult to deal with, a theme which was to continue throughout this game.
Bret started for the Devils but conditions worsened during the inning as the slippery ball caused Bret to hit two Comet hitters in the head. This was compounded by a two run single to get the comets on the board.
The Devils continued to score in the second with again a couple of infield errors costing the Comets allowing 3 more runs to score, highlighted by Dan’s RBI single.
Bret would keep the Comets quiet in the second before the Devils added another run in the 3rd with Sam getting an infield hit and then scoring after another couple of slippery ball errors. In the 4th the Devils again took advantage of the Comets defence as they would plate 4 runs on just 2 hits, although one was a big 2 RBI double by Hsin-Yen. This padded the Devils lead to a seemingly insurmountable 10-2.
Tristram came in to pitch for the Devils in the bottom of the 4th, but now the Devils infield started to creak as a couple of unearned runs would come in to score. In the 4th the Comets would score another run after a deep drive to left field, on another day this might have been an out, but Bret in left field was struggling with a back injury and couldn’t get there in time, one run would come in and looked like another would follow before a relay to Chris W followed by a laser from left field nailed the runner at home to limit the damage.
In the 6th, the Devils again added to their lead with a further 4 runs. The Devils were starting to see Xander well at this point with a double by Chris W, was then forced round by a series of walks and hit by pitch, this put the Devils up 15-5. However, in the bottom of the 6th things really got out of hand as the Devils had more E numbers than a can of Irn Bru as they would give 4 runs straight back to the Comets after a series of mistakes behind an unfortunate Tristram.
In the 7th John came into pitch for the Comets and unlike the Scottish summer today, brought the heat lighting up the radar gun. However, Andrew was able to work a walk and was driven in by Chris W with a RBI double.
Hsin Yen then came in for the Devils to try and work the 3 inning save, but again was hampered by some sloppy defence behind him which allowed the Comets to score 3 runs to close the gap to 16-12.
In the 8th inning there was a feat which I doubt has been achieved in baseball before as John struck out all 4 men he faced in the inning, but still gave up a run as James was able to reach on a wild pitch strikeout before stealing 2nd and 3rd and then a delayed steal of home to extend the lead to 17-12 going into the bottom of the 8th.
In the bottom of the 8th things got very interesting, the Comets scored one run and a combination of walks and errors loaded the bases for hard hitting pitcher John to step in to bat as the tying run. He then launched a massive shot to deep left field, Dan made a great diving effort at the wall but couldn’t quite get there allowing 3 runs to score, later in the inning a further run would then score to tie the game at 17-17.
The Devils had the top of the order up in the 9th and made the most of it as Chris W was able to single and then come home on a wild pitch to put the Devils ahead again. The Devils would then get runners to 2nd and 3rd, but John struckout the last man to end the threat with his 7th strikeout in 3 innings.
So the Comets needed one to tie in the bottom of the 9th. Things started well for the Devils as Yu Sheng recorded the first out with a nice play at third, then Hsin-Yen would snare a come backer to record the second out. However, the next man walked brining the go ahead run to the plate and on a 2-2 count Hsin-yen blew a fastball past the number 9 hitter to end the game with the Devils surviving with a 18-17 win.
So the Devils got the win, but didn’t really deserve it after a below par performance albeit in trying conditions, they know they will need to play much better for the rest of the season if they have designs on defending their title.
As for the Comets, this was a game they could have won and a good display from a much improved team who will be a match for anyone this season.
MVP Chris Wilmott 4-6, 2 2B, 5 Runs, 1 RBI and some nice defensive plays.
