Game write up:

Glasgow Galaxy hosted the Edinburgh Giants in the second meeting of the season on Sunday in what proved to be a closely fought game that was only decided in the final few innings.

The young right, Evaldas “Elvis” Grinys took to the mound for Galaxy, facing off versus veteran lefty, Kyle. (Apologies to Giants players as I only have first names on the scorecard).

Giants threatened in the first inning with a walk and hit by Arik and Kyle, but couldn’t capitalize on the chance – leaving both stranded. Galaxy put one run on the board in the bottom of the first when hits by Jim Sehar and Luis Harvey got Sehar to third, who scored on a passed ball. Giants and Galaxy both went quietly in the second – Kyle and Elvis both picking up two ‘Ks’ apiece.

Giants showed they meant business in the top of the third when they would send 8 men to the plate. A hit batsman, and walk and hits by Kyle (double), Luis and Mickey brought three runs around. Galaxy would answer with three straight singles in the bottom half – including a RBI single from right-fielder Andy Sweeney. After three – Giants 3, Galaxy 2.

Giants scored again in the fourth when a two out rally was started with a double by Arik and then two singles would bring him home. The inning could have proved more damaging if not for an inspired diving catch by shortstop Jim Sehar (playing short stop for the first time this year – on his way to playing all 9 positions!)

A pitching change in the 6th for Galaxy saw Albert Rodriguez take the ball. He’s proved to be a reliable reliever this year and would need to be at his best to give Galaxy a chance to come back.

In the bottom of the sixth, Galaxy would chip away again and take advantage of a walk and two stolen bases by John Tafe. He would score on an error. Giants 4, Galaxy 3.

Rodriguez would only face 3 batters in the 7th as he got some help in the field when a 6-4-3 double play was turned expertly by Sehar to Houston to Harvey.

Galaxy got another one back when Mike Sweeney roped a one-out double, stole third and then came home on a passed ball. All tied at 4 after seven innings.

Rodriquez started the 8th with two walks, but then found his form to retire the side with no runs scored.

Galaxy finally broke through in the bottom of the 8th with a leadoff walk to Rodriguez who came all the way around on a single by Tafe. Galaxy would score one more in the frame – taking a 6-4 lead.

This would prove to be the deciding runs as Rodriguez would strike out the side in the bottom of the 9th to secure the win.

Giants showed their record is not a true reflection of their talent as they displayed timely hitting and some stellar fielding – making several nice plays in the infield, making it a frustrating day for Galaxy bats.

Galaxy will be happy to get the ‘W’ – putting them a game and half clear in the standings.

Elvis Grinys pitch 5 strong innings picking up 6 Ks.

Albert Rodriguez picked up his second win in relief this year and lowered his ERA to and even 3.00.

Paul Houston showed skills at second base – making a few tough plays on an uneven infield.

Kyle pitched a solid game and kept Galaxy batters off balance. He picked up 6K in 9 innings.
