Game write up:

The Devils squared off against the Giants in the sweltering heat with two even looking line-ups we were poised for an exciting game.
The Giants struck first by taking advantage of an infield error to score the first run of the game, before Tristram pitching for the Devils struck out the last two batters to limit the damage. The Devils responded in the bottom of the inning with this time an outfield error allowing Sylvain to get on base and then score on a sac fly.

Both teams settled down after that and the defence and pitching took control with both sides upping their game. First the Devils would work a double play with Tristram snaring a line drive before doubling off opposing pitcher Kyle at first. But Kyle would responding in the bottom of the inning by striking out two batters to work around a couple of errors.

In the bottom of the third inning the Devils had a threat with 2nd and 3rd and one out. However, they escaped the danger with a strikeout followed by a foiled steal of home with Panda able to catch Hsin-Yen red handed at the plate to keep the scores level.

In the 4th the Devils would flash the leather again with Tristram starting a 1-6-3 double play from the mound to end the inning. However in the 5th the Devils resistance was finally broken, with Paul getting a hard hit single to the outfield, pinch runner Rafa would then score on an infield error to put the Giants in front. And that error would prove costly as two batters later 3rd Baseman Luis would hit a mammoth 2 run homer to left field to put the Giants in front 4-1.

The Devils looked to respond immediately but were still struggling to get hits off Kyle. However, they would score a run in the bottom of the 5th without a hit as Andrew would reach on error before scoring on a second error to reduce the deficit to 4-2.

Hsin-Yen then came on in relief in the 6th and was immediately helped out by his predecessor as he induced a sharp grounder to short which Tristram ran to the bag before firing to first whilst hurdling the runner for the 3rd double play of the game. In the bottom of the inning the Devils looked to get things going off Kyle as Smash hit a well hit ball to the outfield only to be robbed by a nice sliding catch by Arik in centre.

The top of the 7th saw another double play as yet again the Giants picked out Tristram with a liner who promptly doubled of the runner at the second to end the threat. The Devils looked to use this momentum to finally get some runs and things started well with rookie Matt hitting a well hit double to left centre, before Sylvain would also get on with a well placed infield hit. The pressure on Kyle finally paid off as first James would line a RBI single, before Hsin-Yen launched a deep sac fly to tie the game. However, the Devils weren’t finished as Tristram would then bat in a run to put the Devils in their first lead of the afternoon.

With Hsin-Yen pitching well, the Devils were feeling confident of seeing this one out, however in the top of the 8th the Giants showed they weren’t going to go down without a fight as Ashley hit a hard single before scoring on an errant pickoff throw to tie the game, the go ahead runner then got to second base, but Hsin-Yen fought back to end the threat with the score now tied 5-5.

The Devils had the bottom of the order to up to face Giants reliever Luis in the bottom of the 8th. However, the Devils have a strong lineup all the way down and 2nd baseman Sam was able to work a walk off the hard throwing righty. Matt would then advance the runner on a groundout. With 2 out Sam then attempted to take third on a wild pitch, Panda behind the plate loaded up for a throw to third before thinking better of it but unfortunately for the Giants he couldn’t hold up and the ball escaped his grasp to roll agonisingly out of play to allow the go ahead run to score.

This left the Giants with one last chance to tie the game in the 9th. However, Hsin-Yen was in an unforgiving mood as he retired the side 1-2-3 for a hard fought victory for the Devils.
So an excellently played game of baseball ending in a narrow Devils win to keep them in the title hunt. However, both teams will reflect on a great pitching and defensive display. The Giants will be very disappointed to see this game literally slip from their grasp but if they perform like this for the rest of the season they are bound to have more luck and pick up some wins.
